GENERAL
- What is GIS?
GIS stands for Geographic Information
Systems. The official definition of GIS is a system of hardware and software
used for storage, retrieval, mapping, and analysis of geographic data.
- Where is your office located?
We are located in downtown Painesville, OH in the Lake
County Administration Building at 105 Main Street. The GIS/Tax Map Office
is in the lower level. We are open weekdays from 8:00am to 4:30pm.
GIS DATA
- Where can I get data and how much does it cost?
We offer GIS data in a few different formats: digital
on CD, paper maps, and online viewing.
|
|
- Digital:
CDs can be purchased from our office for $50.00 each. Data formats include:
ESRI Shapefiles & Coverages, DXF, and MrSID & TIFF Orthophotography. Data
Types include everything from Planimetrics (Roads, Buildings, 2' Contours, etc .
. .) to Cadastral (Parcels, Subdivisions, etc . . .). Payment must be received
before CD media can be mailed. Please make checks payable to 'Lake County
Treasurer'.
- Paper:
Printed maps can be obtained in a number of different sizes with varying costs.
However, availability of custom maps is dependant upon staff workload. Click here to see current pricing.
- Online:
If you would prefer to print your own copies from the comfort of your home or business,
visit our LakeNavigator
site where you can search for specific properties or simply explore the county.
We have many types of data available including planimetrics, cadastral, natural
resources, civil, and aerial photography for the entire county. This online service
is provided for free to anybody with an internet connection.
|
- How accurate and current is the GIS data?
The answer to this question depends on the type of data
you are interested in. Our planimetric data (bridges, buildings, centerlines,
2' contours, pavement edges, railroads, streams, lakes, and transmission towers)
were captured from April 2000 orthophotos and meet ASPRS Accuracy Standards for
Class 1 Large-scale Maps. The digital orthophotos have a spatial accuracy
corresponding to 1" = 100'. Parcels are referenced to the digital orthophotos and
follow apparent lines of occupation, therefore, they are not survey accurate.
The parcel layer is continually being updated and the current date will be included
in the disclaimer for the LakeNavigator site. We are in the process of adding
metadata (data about data) to all our GIS layers which will provide detailed information
about precision and accuracy. If you have more specific questions about our
data you may contact us at the Lake County GIS Department.
- What coordinate system or projection is the GIS data in?
Ohio Stateplane coordinate system, North Zone, North
American Datum 1983 (NAD83), US Survey Feet.
TAX MAP / PARCELS
- What is the difference between a 'tax map' and a 'plat' and how
do these relate to the GIS parcel layer online?
|
|
- Tax Map:
Maps that are updated daily by county employees and show ownership, acreage, and
frontage. They are the property of the County Auditor but are maintained by
County Engineer employees.
- Plat Map:
A plan or map of a piece of land with actual or proposed features. These are
static maps most often produced by engineering firms that shows lot dimensions and
other detailed information concerning changes to the land.
- GIS Parcels: The parcel layer online is based on the linework from both the tax maps
and plats but is also adjusted to the April 2000 aerial photos. Information
like ownership, date of last transfer, address, and such comes directly from the
County Auditor's database and is linked to the parcels through the 13-digit parcel
number.
|
- Where can I find my parcel number and what does it tell me?
You can find your parcel ID in a number of places,
including.
|
|
- On your property Tax Bill (upper left-hand corner)
- Auditor's Transfer Office (provide them a name or address)
- Treasurer's Office
- On the Internet. Go to the Auditor's Real Property Information site.
